F.A.Q
Q: When did the Wisconsin Women's Poker League first begin?
A: Our first season started in April of 2007. We try to get in at least two seasons a year.
Q: When does a new season start?
A: There is no set schedule although we attempt to get in two seasons within a year. We try to find a conveinent time frame for the majority of players. We always play on Tuesdays nights. As long as there is interest we will have a season. Check the website or e-mail wwpoker@gmail.com for more details.
Q: How many teams are in your league?
A: Technically there are no teams in our league. In fact, we're more of a private club than a league. We try to average at least 20 players a season. As of yet, there is no set maximum number of players that can play in any one season. Our bare minimum would be 16 players our ideal maximum would be 40.
Q: Would I be taking someone's spot?
A: Absolutely not. This is not a team sport. Each player is playing for themselves so we don't need an even number of players. Because it is an individual sport we are able to have as many players as we want.
Q: Can I come and play just once in a while?
A: Once you pay the league fee upfront you are not required to attend any night at all. However, you do not get any refund on your fees for missing nights. Since we are a point driven league if you aren't there, you aren't scoring points. It's entirely up to you how many nights you want to play...note that it's to everyone else's advantage if you don't show because that makes less players to eliminate nightly and easier points for them. Please note that you DO get to throw out one night per season for bad, low, or no score on a particular night.
I also request that you let the league Captain or another player know when you are going to be absent as a courtesy to the other players in the league.
Q: I'm going to miss the first night of play, can I still join the league?
A: As long as your league fees are paid in full you can miss any night. (See above)
Q: I didn't realize that the league already started can I still play the current season?
A: You might suspect that you can't play once the first night is over. This is not true. Because we throw out 1 week of the 11 weeks that we play you can technically join on night two if you did not play on night one. Your fees would have to be paid by the first hand of that night (in cash) and you will not get to throw out a week of play since you did not play week 1 - you would already have a zero score and that would be your toss out score.
This is a special situation that needs to be approved by the league Captain. There are situations where a request to join on the second night might not be approved.
Q: I'm a beginner to poker, can I still play in the league?
A: We encourage all women interested in poker to play. The league is made up of all different skill levels and poker backgrounds. We have tried to create an environment where players can comfortably play poker and try out new and different strategies. Most of the women in the league will help guide new players with the game mechanics - what cards you play will always be entirely up to you. Check out our Beginners Guide to see where you are at.
Q: I've never played poker before, can I learn here?
A: If you have never played poker before in you life and have zero knowledge of the game I would NOT recommend putting up the league fees to learn it here. Yes, the WWP is a learning environment to enhance your current game, but not for poker basics training. If you don't even know the very basics of how poker is played you will not enjoy trying to catch on in this environment. Check out our Beginners Guide to see where you stand.
As not to discourage women in poker, I encourage you join a FREE bar league that can be found all over town to learn the basics of poker then come on back for a future season. Or perhaps play online for free, have your friends teach you, and / or watch a lot of poker on TV. You don't have to know a ton about poker to play in the WWP, but you do have to have some knowledge of the flow of the game and basic knowledge of the game of poker. For more information on FREE bar leagues in the metro Milwaukee area, please e-mail me at wwpoker@gmail.com.
All women are welcome to come down on game nights and watch as long as it is not disruptive to the league. Questions and comments should be limited to breaks and to players that are no longer playing for the night.
Q: I've played poker before, but never Texas Hold'em poker...can I still join?
A: If you have poker knowledge then learning the game of Texas Hold'em poker will be a snap. I would say that there would be room for you in our league. Check out the Beginners Guide to see where you stand.
Q: Is any of the league fees refundable?
A: No! After the first hand is dealt on the first night of play all monies are locked in and no refunds are offered.*
* There is one exception to this rule and that would be if the league, for whatever reason, is stopped mid-season or cancelled. Then all moneis will be returned to the players in the form of a full refund. In this case current placement of players does not matter. The monies will be divided up equally - each player receiving her initial buy-in back.
Q: I'm very interested in joining what do I have to do now?
A: All you have to do to join the league is express your interest via e-mail to wwpoker@gmail.com or use our contact us page or even fill out our registration form and then await further instruction (which is normally a welcome e-mail with upcoming league information such as registration date, start date, location, time, fee, etc...). We will have a registration date (if possible) prior to league start to collect league fees and answer any questions a player may have.
Q: I have a friend that might want to join, can I bring a friend?
A: 100% YES! It's very much encouraged to talk to your female friends and family about joining. Their process would be the same as yours. The more the merrier.
Q: Can my husband / boyfriend / dad / male person come and watch?
A: NO!...just kidding. Yes, they are welcome to come and watch, but as the same with any guest should remain off to the side and quiet to any part of the game play. The environment we are trying to create is comfort for all women. Some women might not feel comfortable when being critiqued especailly by male counterparts. Non-players should limit their comments to breaks or after the game is over and should be contained to the player they are there to watch and not others. Also consider that it is sometimes easier to play without someone you know watching your every move. This is a "night out with the girls" for a lot of the players. I don't discourage guests, but i don't encourage them either.
